IDIR – Digital twins for the medicine of the future

With the IDIR (Digital Implant Research) cooperation project, experts from Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon and the Universitätsklinikum Schleswig-Holstein are pursuing a common goal: to take patient-specific implant research to a new level.

The focus is on the development of so-called digital twins – computer-aided models that combine the latest findings from material science, biology, biochemistry, computer science, AI and medicine. The aim is to create individual and innovative implants that are better tailored to the needs of individual patients.</strong

Two lighthouse projects in focus:

  • Aneurysm stents: Development of digital twins to improve intracranial implants.
  • Magnesium implants: Establishment of digital twins for biodegradable implants for the treatment of bone fractures.


In the long term, IDIR should also contribute to making digital twins usable in the medical approval process. The aim is to speed up approval procedures and at the same time reduce animal testing or, in the long term, avoid it altogether.
